Coastal & Oceanographic Engineering Laboratory (COEL)  Lathe

The Coastal & Oceanographic Engineering Laboratory (COEL) includes a well-equipped machine and fabrication shop with a history of producing everything from precision apparatus to full scale structures. Listed below are the major pieces of equipment in the shop.

  • Lathes
    • Boye and Emmes 16 inch swing / 5 horsepower
    • South Bend 14 inch swing / 1 ½ horsepower
    • South Bend 4 inch swing / ½ horsepower
  • Vertical Mills
    • Bridgeport 2 horsepower / 48 inch by 9 inch bed
    • Bridgeport 1 horsepower / 42 inch by 9 inch bed
  • Drilling
    • Powermatic 1½ horsepower / 6 inch stroke
    • Grosiger 1½ horsepower / High capacity table
    • Delta ¾ horsepower / 6 inch stroke
  • Cutting
    • Do-All vertical band saw with 36 inch throat
    • Kalamazoo 9A horizontal band saw 9 inch by 16 inch capacity
    • ESAB PCM-875 60 amp plasma cutter
    • Oxy-acetylene cutting up to 2 inch
    • Sheet metal shear with 14 gauge capacity
  • Forming
    • Sheet metal roller 4 foot width/ 1/16th inch capacity
    • Sheet metal Brake 4 foot width / 1/16th inch capacity
  • Welding
    • Shielded metal arc
    • Gas metal arc
    • Gas tungsten arc
    • Flux core arc
    • Up to 300 amps

 Displacement laser rail mounts fabricated at the laboratory.
mast arm
 Full scale mast arm structure fabricated at the laboratory
 for combined loading of experimental deep foundations.
