The Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure & Environment (ESSIE) is the nexus where civil, environmental, and coastal and oceanographic faculty come together to solve unique problems of sustainability. The School is home to the Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering (CCE) and the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences (EES). The School encompasses eight research centers: the Bridge Software Institute; the Center for Environmental Policy; the Center for Infrastructure Protection and Physical Security; the Center for Multimodal Solutions for Congestion Mitigation; the Howard T. Odum Center for Wetlands; the Southeastern Transportation Research, Innovation, Development and Education Center; the Transportation Research Center; and the Water Resources Research Center. In addition, the School also includes two service centers: the Florida Transportation Technology Transfer Center and McTrans.

ESSIE offers broad-based, yet cutting-edge undergraduate and graduate programs. Undergraduates have a choice of two exceptional undergraduate degree programs, one leading to a B.S. in Civil Engineering and the other a B.S. in Environmental Engineering. Each program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET and both provide options for a combined Bachelors/Master's degree (i.e., "4-1 Program") in which students may double-count graduate course credit to accelerate progress toward a Master's degree. ESSIE also offers six separate Master's and PhD programs in three major disciplines: Civil Engineering, Coastal and Oceanographic Engineering, and Environmental Engineering Sciences. The current (academic year 2012-2013) enrollment is 1149 students, which includes 713 undergraduates (515 in CCE and 198 in EES) and 436 graduate students (310 in CCE and 126 in EES). Instilling excellence in teaching, research, leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurship are the School's highest priorities. A growing number of our undergraduate and graduate students are participating in a College-wide initiative to foster concomitant training in entrepreneurship, innovation, and leadership skills in engineering.

ESSIE has 44 tenure-track faculty and 12 non-tenure-track research scientists and engineers augmented by a professional staff of 85 of laboratory technicians and support personnel. We have five NSF CAREER awardees, and almost 50% of our faculty members are past recipients of College, University, or National awards recognizing excellence in teaching and mentoring.

The School's research program equates to $40 million active grants, yielding more than $14 million in research expenditures for 2011-2012 alone. This places ESSIE among all the largest academic and research units in the UF College of Engineering. During that same 2011-2012 time period, new research awards exceeded $15.4 million of which 73% came from federal sources.

ESSIE is uniquely comprehensive in its ability to address the new research on coastal, environmental, infrastructure and community needs. No other institution offers a suite of academic and research programs or synthesizes and combines all of the unique qualifications and the positioning provided by ESSIE. The unique position of ESSIE to address Florida's needs is extensible to other coastal states within the Southeastern Coastal Plain (including the Gulf Coast and Atlantic seaboard states) and other countries (such as Italy, the Netherlands or Australia) where the coastal interface supports civil infrastructure systems, a sustainable environment of air/water/terrestrial/ecological resources, and human communities. The School's state-of-the-art laboratory and facilities for teaching and research include 89,000 square feet of existing laboratory space, $4 M of new laboratories, 3-D X-ray Tomographic Unit, Category 5 Hurricane Wind Simulator, Signal Control Lab, Two 6-D Shaker Tables; Vehicle Based Traffic Data Acquisition System, Full-scale Geoengineering Soil Test Chambers, 2.5m Centrifuge, TARP Certified Stormwater Unit Operations and Process (UOP) Testing Facility, UF Atmospheric Photochemical Outdoor Reactor, and access to the high-performance computing center, as well as Major Analytical Instrumentation Center. These facilities and others are available to support faculty engaged in interdisciplinary sustainability research and to promote active collaborations with faculty campus wide.
